- Bill Bickers, owner Offering expDETROIT (AP) - Bob Welke is a real-life "Jukebox Hero," at least in the minds of some owners of the vintage musical machines. Instead of seeking stardom atop the pop music charts, however, it's mainly personal gratification that motivates the longtime Detroit resident's love affair with the colorful behemoths.

A self-proclaimed jukebox aficionado, Welke, 63, has been in the business of repairing and collecting jukeboxes for the past three decades. He is one of only a handful of people in Michigan qualified to fix them. "They've pretty much gone the way of the dinosaurs and typewriters," Welke said of the coin-operated machines that play 45s - records that were like big CDs with a bigger hole in them.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, jukeboxes could be found in virtually every malt shop, bar and bowling alley across the country. Today, "there are even fewer people around who can fix them," Welke joked. That's why the retired General Motors Corp. engineer spends his days in the cluttered workshop of his home on the city's east side, meticulously working on the musical antiques in an effort to restore some of the sound and splendor of a bygone era.

"There is an indescribable feeling of accomplishment derived from taking something that hasn't worked for years and making it look and sound like new," he said. "It's a satisfaction that all the money in the world can't buy." Serving a clientele that extends beyond Michigan to throughout the Midwest and parts of Canada, Welke has earned a reputation as one of the best in the business. Although he advertises in a few trade publications, most of his business is through word of mouth.

He rarely makes house calls, preferring instead that customers deliver the jukeboxes - which can weigh between 250 to 600 pounds - to him. Welke's infatuation with jukeboxes began as a boy, when his father purchased a couple Wurlitzer models, regarded by some collectors as the Cadillac of jukeboxes. He recalled being mesmerized by the colorful lights, gleaming chrome and the enticing sound of the pulsating music blaring from the speakers.

Today, Welke is the proud owner of more than 100 of the classic machines. He has 20 in his basement and more throughout the house. Not all the machines he owns are operational; some are works in progress, while others are simply kept around for spare parts, which can be difficult to find nowadays. Asked whether he has a personal favorite in his collection, Welke confessed to a fondness for the Wurlitzer 800 model. To complement his collection, Welke has an equally impressive anthology of thousands of old-time records, mainly 45s and some 78s.

The collection includes some of his favorite rock 'n' roll artists: Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Bill Haley and His Comets. Welke's admiration for the skill and detailed craftsmanship that went into making jukeboxes is evident. "Jukeboxes are one of the few true American art forms around," he explained. "We really started it all, and nobody ever quite achieved the level that we did in regards to the art and engineering involved." Because his handiwork is considered a vanishing art, Welke's services don't come cheaply.

Costs can vary from less than $100 for something as simple as a broken knob to extensive and timely restoration jobs that can cost thousands of dollars.

But Welke's greatest reward comes from seeing a customer's face after he completes a job. "For some, it's like Christmas morning all over again," Welke said with a smile. "Realistically, what I've done is to rescue something that was headed for the graveyard and restored life to it.
